THALIA ZEDEK - Vocals, guitar
CHRIS BROKAW - guitar, Vocals ARTHUR JOHNSON - drums SEAN O'BRIEN - bass An establishment "journalist" once quoted Thalia Zedek (inaccurately, I think) as saying Come originally set out to play "pretty, but scary" music. Over the past three years, this Boston based quartet has managed to encompass far more extreme ends of the spectrum - no other group we've heard has made rock music sound so harrowing and beautiful at once. That this is accomplished with a minimum of melodrama, yet an abundance of poise (i.e. do not challenge them to a staring match), just makes requisite comparisons even tougher to invent. The second full -length album from come, Don't Ask Don't Tell was recorded throughout early 1994 at sites in Memphis, New York city and the bustling metropolis that is Stoughton, MA. Early attempts at recording at a Hoboken facility were aborted when the ghost of Lenny Kravitz appeared and insisted on "jamming" with the group (an exorcist could not be hired as this happened during Super Bowl Weekend). "More than any of Thalia Zedek's previous projects, come harnesses her formidable energies to a classically rock & roll ensemble process. Zedek and Chris Brokaw have forged a twin-guitar attack that stands out even in these guitar-rich times... escape velocity with a concentrated blast of guitar power, tunecraft and sheer guts" ----- Robert Palmer ,Rolling Stone "Come's music evokes those moments in rock's demonic journey when the seam is about the split; the Rolling Stones, stunned in a hotel room after the death ride at Altamont; Lou Reed in 1975, hiding the wreckage of his wasted face with an extra layer of black makeup...this Boston band travels through these dark zones with the singer and guitarist Thalia Zedek as an intrepid guide. some people call it the blues" ----- Ann Powers, The New York Times. "Come is a rarity among guitar bands these days. They give you the passion and emotion of the blues without referencing the Rolling Stones note for note. I suspect there will be lots o of people going back to Thalia Zedek's previous work (Live Skull, Uzi) to find out what brought her writing and playing to its current place." ----- Bob Mould. Sugar |
