| THE CULT BIOGRAPHIES Part 1 (General) Part 2 (Death Cult) Part 3 (Dreamtime) Part 4 (Love) Part 5 (Peace) Part 6 (Electric) Live At The Lyceum On
8 May 1984, The Cult embarked on their eagerly anticipated, 12 date
debut tour of England.
The group last played their home ground as Death Cult in November 1983 but had, since then, undergone a name change, played dates in north America, and musically moved on from their 'positive punk - gothic' roots towards re-establishing 'rock' which had been discredited in the press since the onset of punk. The previous month their debut single, 'Spiritwalker', had topped the independent charts so the critical knives were already sharpened for the fall of this 'gothic supergroup'. "Well just what did you expect to hear" asked the UK music paper,Melody Maker, "that the cult are finished? That they've finally suffocated in the terminally dull gothic melodrama they themselves helped to engender? Sit back. take a sip of that large whisky. I bring news that may shock but is important. After twelve months of re-adjusting, growing up in public and exorcising the past, Ian, Billy, Jamie and Nigel have emerged with a live show few will match, and a set of songs many will wish to copy. They've taken stock, surfaced with a refreshingly new, low-profile strategy and a burning ambition to achieve something that will stimulate a maximum audience." The last date of the tour was The Cult's London debut, at an old Edwardian ballroom in the Strand, the Lyceum. Despite the formal surroundings and the natural apathy of a sunday evening, the venue soon filled to capacity with old punks, goths, new acolytes, Everton supporters and the merely curious. The set included songs from the various incarnations of the band; the Southern Death Cult's 'Moya'; Death Cult favourites like 'Gods Zoo', 'Brothers Grimm' and 'Ghost Dance' to brand new songs from the then unreleased debut album, 'Dreamtime'. For the first time, the entire fifteen song set, including encores,
is now documented on this video and compact disc and stands as an early
testament to the power and spirit of the cult. ** The video has been remastered from the original master of the full concert and has a new soundbed dubbed in Dolby Surround Sound. |
