THE CULT DEMOS BOX SET - FOR HARDCORE FANS ONLY
01/03/2002
The demo sessions is a special 5 x CD box set issued in a limited edition worldwide and initially only available through Alma Road Mail Order.

If you’ve been listening to the Cult’s music for a long time then it’s quite another trip hearing these demo sessions. When you’ve known the authorised version of a song for years it’s a revelation to be confronted with it’s skeleton - the first studio version, usually performed in one take, with no fleshed-out textures - the raw, rock ‘n’ roll, guitar / bass / drums version.

The content of these recordings ranges from early instrumental ideas through works in progress to almost complete songs. Hats off to The Cult; they don’t need a top producer to make them sound good - these demos (overseen by the band themselves) have an alchemy beyond the grasp of lesser bands. The unadorned Duffy riffs still have major power and when loose, one-take guide vocals sound this passionate you can recognise that Ian Astbury is one of the best rock vocalists of his generation.

There are performances here that the band probably regard as below par according to their own high standards - particularly the first Sonic Temple session where they recorded an incredible 21 songs over two days and the Ceremony demos, recorded equally fast and live in one take - but this is a series of complete, warts ‘n’ all archival releases for the hardcore fan who can see beyond any shortcomings and appreciate the primitive power and conviction in the music.

See the demo sessions page for further details and tracklistings
