THE BEST of JOHNNY G /
A MONTH OF SUNDAYS

code: JG CD 1
JOHN GOTTING ? or JOHNNY G ?

A ONE MAN BAND ? or A BAND LEADER ?

AN UNKNOWN ? or A LEGEND ?

Well, paradoxically, all of them. From the self-financed single in 1972 to the self-financed CD in 1994, John's career serves as a grand introduction to the OTHER side of Rock that has much to do with 'the music' and a deficiency of concern for 'the business'. Indeed his disbelief and amusement at the machinations of 'making it' have kept him further from the mainstream than penguins from the North Pole. A true independent, he lives as a working musician. Backed by teenagers and pensioners, he has played over 3000 gigs around the world, is a natty dresser, a natural gentleman and probably Europe's finest one man band as well as a big band leader.

Mr. Gotting has released his first compact disc in typical style as a de-luxe, premiere edition of 1000 double CD sets incorporating new live recordings on one disc and a compilation of past glories on the other.

Disc One - A Month of Sundays was recorded live over the last four weeks of a long-term Sunday residence in Bath and represents the varied musical combinations that JG has performed with over the past few years: Solo one-man-band / Duo with esoteric guests / Group (double bass and drums) with a horn section (The Ska Syncopators) or string section (The Walcot Strings).

And the music? It's a glorious mother of all fusions, mixing New Orleans trad, blues, country, Chuck 'n' Bo, ska, swing and standards into a seamless vision of 20th century pop.

Disc Two - The Best of Johnny G is the Professor of Pop's personal choice from his past singles, four albums and rare cuts. With a host of guest contributions ranging from Aswad to the Rumour, and production by Bob Andrews, the legendary Ed Hollis and Steve Lillywhite, these recordings earned John accolades and a perfectly dedicated following. 21 Classics! - including 'Three tears', 'Alone with her tonight', 'I'm into something good' and 'G-Beat'

"Absolutely wonderful double CD set that's sadly 'not available in any shop', as they say. Together with John Spencer's Louts, Gotting (aka Johnny G) was a prime mover in the vibrant mid-to-late '70's west London scene that anticipated and shadowed the New Wave / ska / punk movements - somehow all at the same time. Gotting was groomed by Beggars Banquet for righteous stardom, panicked, got out, moved to Bath, and (apart from a collaboration with Spencer on his 'Out with a Bang' album a decade ago) this is the first we've heard of him since. The new live CD shows him on tip-top, Slim Harpo-influenced rootsy-ska form; the 'Best Of...' shows just how fucking good he really was / is."

Jim Driver - TIME OUT March 22-29

"From reggae to ska, delicately picked burners and more, he has constantly produced the kind of quality that built the reputation of Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds... I for one think it's time for the Johnny G / John Gotting revival."
