	With the acclaim being given to Mercury Rev's new album, Deserter's Songs (unfortunately Beggars haven't released that one!), it's worth checking out their earlier releases. 	BOCES---- - Meth Of A Rockette's Kick - Trickle Down - Bronx Cheer - Boys Peel Out - Downs Are Feminine Balloons - Something For Joey - Snorry Mouth - Hi-Speed Boats - Continuous Drunks and Blunders - Girlfren   The Rev In Extremis. Likened by Jonathan Donahue to "your rebellious second kid who doesn't pay attention to one word you say and is always in trouble", 'Boces' is overplayed, overblown and underhand. A collection of glorious melodies searching vainly for some songs, according to Grasshopper it features "tones that only dogs can hear" and "a lot of weird things in the studio that haven't been done since". Be afraid. Keith Cameron - NME		SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE - Empire State - Young Mans Stride - Sudden Ray of Hope - Everlasting Arm - Racing the Tide - Close Encounters of the 3rd Grade - A Kiss From an Old Flame - Peaceful Night       The Bakes is gone and he's quickly forgotten. So unambiguously lovely are songs like 'A Kiss From An Old Flame' and 'Racing The Tide' it's amazing the Rev accomodated their former singer's disruptive impulses for so long. Featuring much sharper arrangements, with brass and woodwind to the fore, some tracks still meander a little too wantonly for their own good. A huge step forward nonetheless. Keith Cameron - NME
