| Brian Leary, the principle musician and songwriter of Polyphemus, originates from the Southern Californian desert, a place seeped in local Indian Folklore and mythology. Starting his musical career on drums, he played in a variety of bands, mastering an assortment of instruments and becoming, in effect, a one man band. However, a chance meeting with Elvira Corral changed all this and created Polyphemus.
An attempt to expand the band with additional musicians failed to materialise, so in their usual assured approach Polyphemus the duo, became proficient in 8 track production and out emanated demo tapes, bursting with loud layered guitars which could not fail to excentuate the remarkably strong pop songs they had written. Influences encapsulated the mad mid sixties pop psychedelia of The Who and The Byrds, but references from contemporary sources such as Sonic Youth ensured their modern sound. Their debut release The Great Village Trip e.p came out on the fledgling Placebo label on 10" vinyl. Four songs presented in their original form and cut directly from the demo tape. The reaction from the music press was positive, but UK radio really supported the single, numerous plays from Peel, Radcliffe and Crowley plus many regional ILR stations. Beggars Banquet signed Polyphemus after hearing the early stages of what is now the superb debut album Scrapbook Of Madness. Recorded at the 24 track A&R studios in the Coachella valley, a tiny, earthy and basic studio set deeply in Rancho Marage in the style of a hacienda; Polyphemus managed to get through two engineers before coming to the conclusion that for the best results, as in the past, they could do the production themselves. Given free reign in the studio, sessions started in early evenings and lasted until the following morning; they became imersed in that infested bathroom, taking trips to an area called ' Wild Horse Plateau' which boasts breathtaking views and consequently gave them inspiration for the title of the single ' Masses of Tiny Dots', which was released on the 19th April 1993. A second album, Stonehouse, expanded on their warped psychedelia and was released in 1995 but the duo disbanded shortly thereafter (and before they could tour to promote it). Thus they vanished back into the desert... |
