Curt Perkins - vocals, guitar
Charles Wyrick - lead guitar Alan Johnstone - drums Preach Rutherford - bass Stella was born in North Carolina. The band spent its formative years involved in a bi-city existence between Charlotte, NC and their current hometown of Nashville, TN. Frontman Curt Perkins has been performing in the music and theater world since the age of eight. His resumé includes everything from production credits on several albums (including Ascension) to European performances of solo material to recitals of Kurt Weil and Ravel to extensive touring and recording with his previous band Thurn and Taxis Stella's recently completed Beggars Banquet debut, Ascension, was produced by Glenn Rosenstein (Talking Heads, Marry Me Jane, Emmett Swimming) and Perkins. The band is composed of drummer extraordinaire Alan Johnstone (formerly of Thurn and Taxis and Rumble Circus), lead guitarist Charles Wyrick (who hails from Charleston, SC's proto-punk band Curious George), and bassist Preach (from Nashville bands Swing and Vagantis) Despite the dense sonic landscape that Stella creates, the music is uniquely American. Grooves drawn from the "emotion signal" psychology of Sly Stone and Marvin Gaye beckon the listener inward to darker, more assaultive tonal structures contemporized by Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead and others. Stella confrontsand compels. Melodic edges and intense vocals are woven into songs populated by explosively raw guitar and tightly focused songwriting. Perkins' emotive abilities provide an affecting vehicle for his lyrics which range from confessional narratives to cryptic mediations on anger, politics and hope.
"Stella is a study in brooding, achieved with abstracted guitars which coil around each other like snakes inamorata, and just as slithery-sharp." - Natasha Stovall / Village Voice "The music lurches with unusual melodies that slip unpredictably from beauty to discord. Perkins has an eerie, delicate tenor that's reminiscent of Jeff Buckley's other-worldly tones, and the band navigates the tricky arrangements with a muscular tautness" - Chicago Sun-Times |
